How to own your wedding without breaking the bank

With the rise of online sharing and visual documentation comes huge pressure to be the best and look the best. There are certain events that certainly feel the raff of these changes, weddings are one of them. Making your wedding day look like a page on Pinterest is increasingly difficult and expensive. Like a lot of things in life, with great expectation and planning comes huge expense. Weddings are certainly no exception. As our tastes become more advanced our budgets certainly feel the weight of our imaginations. For this reason, I’d like to share some top tips to help you save the pennies. Here’s how you can create your dream day without breaking the bank and feeding your beloved guests sausage rolls, as lovely as they are, it won’t look good on Instagram.

Your day is about one thing and one thing only, you and your loved one making a beautiful commitment. When wrapped up in the excitement of it all it’s important you have somebody documenting the day for you. Wedding photographers are a perfect way of making sure you have a keepsake that will remind you of the special moments. However, they come at a cost. Look for photographers starting out in the industry. This does not mean you are going to lose quality, arrange to see their body of previous work in detail and of course outline your needs for the day. Another top tip and a great way to bring an element of fun and participation to the day is by placing disposable cameras on the tables for your guests to use at their own free will. This encourages your guest to get on their feet and be involved. Not to mention how great the disposable images will look placed in a frame and added to your new home. The photos are sure to capture the fun filled aspect of your wedding.

With regards to music, I’d like to think we are behind the days of your typical ‘wedding DJ’ assuming we are all huge ‘Take That’ fans and love nothing more than Robbie Williams on repeat. That’s not to say that we didn’t love it at the time but tastes are shifting and we are ready for something more alternative. Perhaps you are lucky enough to have a friend who plays in what happens to be a great live band. Question if discounted ‘mate rates’ would be an option, maybe you have something you could repay the favour with at a later date. Better yet, invest time into making your own playlist. Buy a docking station and suitable speakers that are sure to get people on their feet. Indeed, making a playlist that will last the entire evening of your wedding may seem like a daunting task but there’s nothing like asking for a little help from your friends. Combine your own and your partner’s favourite jams and additionally include the top picks form your guests, this way you’re sure to have tracks to suit everyone’s party needs.

There is however, no party without a venue. Finding affordable wedding venues can be like finding a needle in a hay stack. Ways to try and scrimp back the pennies when booking your venue is to consider marrying on a day that isn’t a Saturday. Yes, we all want to get married on the weekend, it makes life easier for our guests and means nobody has to take time off work. Give your loved ones enough notice and I really don’t see how this will cause an issue. Fridays are a great choice, not many people will argue about having to take a long weekend off. Open your venue search to areas, stretching out further than the city. Barns are fast becoming a popular choice, granted they too can still be pricey but generally they have already been done up with all the swanky fittings. Using your skills and anyone else you can convince to help, get creative designing your own venue decorations. I’ve learnt there is nothing a bulk pack of fairy lights can’t solve.

Finally, every bride wants to look their best on their big day. Another area you can certainly cut back on is hair and make-up. Don’t panic, I’m not suggesting you scrap this all together. I do understand it’s just as important as the dress, I certainly would not be seen without it on my wedding day. I would however grab a friend and together teach ourselves the tricks of the trade. Especially when it comes to make up, the internet is jammed video tutorials telling us what new expensive make up to buy next and how of course we should be applying it. Invest time learning the ropes and you and your friend can make use of your new skill come the big day. You are of course free to do as many try outs as you so wish.

It’s important you don’t get too bogged down with the financial side of planning your wedding. Sure, it’s important and requires thought. But know that you can still achieve a beautiful day without having to spend your entire life savings. Know that so long as you encompass what makes you and your husband or wife to be so special, both you and your guests will be happy. Not to mention the bank balance. Happy wedding planning!

Taking Care of Someone: Some Useful Tips

Being tasked with taking care of another human being is surely one of the most daunting things that can happen to someone. While we don’t want to make it out to be some horror story, it can be an extremely difficult and frightening task. In fact, many people live in fear of having to do it some day. It can stem from a fear of the ageing of your parents. After all, as the next of kin, you’re going to have to decide what to do with an elderly parent. There’s also the fear that something could happen to your partner that would necessitate full-time care.

Flickr

This may sound like pretty selfish thinking. The focus is being put on you as opposed to the well-being of the other person. But that’s because we’re only thinking hypothetically. If something does actually happen that requires you to care for someone else, it will be completely different. Indeed, it will be very different to what you’ve imagined on many levels. Some of it will be more difficult than you had originally thought. Some of it won’t be anywhere near as terrible as you thought it would be.

But as this article will display, a little bit of selfish thinking can work to everyone’s benefit. That is if you’re combining it with positive thinking and selflessness. You’ll see what I mean as we go along.

Living with someone suffering from mental illness

While we often think about the physically disabled, we rarely take much time to consider those living with mental illness. While the stigma is slowly making its way out, there’s still a very “behind closed doors” aspect to mental illness. It’s certainly the most abstract and most difficult to understand. It’s much easier to see yourself caring for someone who is clearly unable to do certain things for themselves. But having to be an emotional support to someone who may be unable to deal with their own emotions? It’s harder to imagine.

takingcare2

YouTube

The first step is understanding the types of mental illness that could cause these problems. Mental illnesses can cause severe problems with mood, thinking, and general behaviour. It’s not something someone can go through with the power of their own mind. Many make the mistake of thinking someone suffering from a mental illness can simply “get over it”. This is especially true in the cases of anxiety and depression. This mindset can also negatively affect the carer: after all, if someone can just “get over it”, then why aren’t you able to help them do so?

There are many types of mental illness. Anxiety disorders and mood disorders are more common than you may think. It’s not just a case of “the occasional blues”. They can manifest themselves physically and render someone unable to handle many everyday tasks. Interacting with others or leaving the house can become extremely difficult and stressful. There are also psychotic disorders, which alter someone’s thinking and awareness. Schizophrenia is an example of a psychotic problem. Hallucinations and delusions are features of these disorders.

You need to help the person develop and follow routines in their daily life. These are often the first things to suffer when someone has a mental illness. While it may seem like a small thing, keeping some sort of routine is going to help tremendously. A first step here is to try creating regular times for going to bed and getting up in the morning. These tasks can be particularly difficult for that person, as sleeping troubles are also common here. Try to keep them active with energetic activities, even if that is just a daily walk. Make sure they take their prescribed medicines in order to help them deal with their problem. And if suicidal thoughts become a topic, don’t be afraid to talk to them about it. Getting professional assistance can be vital here. But make sure you don’t avoid talking frankly with your loved one about these thoughts. This will help prevent bottled-up emotions. As I’m sure you know from personal experience, bottling up emotions is rarely a good thing.

Looking after the elderly

Many of us spend a lot of time worrying about when our elderly loved one will need help, as opposed to if. It’s important to look out for the signs that someone may need help soon. Increased forgetfulness, decrease in personal hygiene and injuries are the more obvious signs. But even these can be hidden by the person suffering from them.

Have observed behaviour that suggests that your elderly loved one needs to be taken care of? Then you need to discuss it with them directly. Discuss what you’ve observed and ask them for their opinion on what might be happening. If they acknowledge the problems, then don’t instantly make action plans for them. Ask them what they think would be the ideal solution.

takingcare4

Many elderly people who acknowledge that they need some extra care would prefer to be at home, or at least at a family member’s home. The first thing you should do is make sure your house is suitable for their stay. As you surely know by now, the elderly have a much harder time moving around houses then you do. The ideal solution would be to make sure their room is located on the lower floor. The closest room to any downstairs bathroom facilities would be the best. But if rooming on the lower floor isn’t possible, you may want to look into getting a stairlift. Many other areas of the house will probably need to be modified in order to accommodate them. What about the front of the house? Are there stairs leading up to your front door? You could have these converted into a ramp. Even if your elderly loved one isn’t in a wheelchair, a well-built ramp will make it much easier to get up and down. You’ll also need to install anti-slip measures in your bathrooms and showers.

takingcare5

Wikimedia

The best thing you can do here is help your loved one keep busy. Don’t assume they’re going to be just fine sitting on the sofa and watching television. Use this time to interact with them more than you might have done in the past few years. To help yourself be prepared for elderly care, you can take an educational course on the subject. It’s important to know as much as possible in order to protect them properly if something goes wrong. And if it gets too much, you should remember that it’s possible to get help in quality assisted living. See HC-Care-Homes for more details.

Taking care of yourself

This is where the whole “little bit of selfish thinking” thing I mentioned earlier comes into play. The fact is that looking after someone else can be extremely trying for you. Having to take on all these extra responsibilities will increase your stress, which is going to have a lot of adverse health effects. Sleeplessness and irritability are common in these kinds of situations for the carer. You may often end up thinking you need someone to take care of you!

takingcare6

Flickr

Well, you do. That “someone”, however, probably has to be you. You need to make sure you’re taking time out in order to calm down and give yourself some breathing space. If there’s someone else who can help you look after the person, take advantage of this and consider a holiday. In fact, many care facilities offer “respite” services. You can leave your loved one in professional care for a few days while you focus on yourself. Discuss this with the person, but try to avoid making them feel like a burden. Be honest about the stress the situation is putting you under, but make sure they know that you love them. Make sure you still think you’re the best person to do this and that you’re going to back with them as soon as possible. Explain to them the importance of looking after yourself.

It’s important to keep as positive an outlook as possible during the entire process. This can take many forms. Usually, it will involve finding the “silver lining” amongst what seems like a “dark cloud” situation. Here’s an example of positive thinking in the case of a parent. If you’re taking care of an elderly parent, you can think of this as repayment for all the time they took care of you. This may seem like flawed reasoning to you, if you think about it. After all, you didn’t choose to be born, and they were legally obliged to look after you! While this is all true, you shouldn’t let it distract you from what is, ultimately, positive thinking.

takingcare7

Pixabay

Ultimately, this is going to affect everyone positively. If you’re stressed, overworked and tired, then it’s going to negatively affect your ability to take care of this person properly. Your loved one needs a positive and comfortable environment. Help provide it to them by making sure you look after yourself. Get some sleep, meet up with friends – heck, even sit around and watch television if it helps!

You should also look into all your options for financial help. Taking care of someone with mental or physical disabilities can take a financial toll, but there is assistance available. See the NHS website for more details.

Priceless Skills to Have as an Entrepreneur

So you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, a futurist and a visionary. To be successful in your quest you need to invest time to learn and hone the skills needed to enable you to excel in your start up business. Time is precious and one of the most valuable aspects of your journey. Use and abuse it and you’ll find yourself lagging behind in what is a very competitive market.

A question you must ask yourself before committing to anything is ‘do I have what it takes’? A simple question but one that holds great weight. Confidence in yourself is where your success will begin. Any doubt at this stage and you’ll be self-destructive going forward.

Hunger and courage

Too many people forget about the skills we hold within us, the more emotionally driven skills. These are just as important if not more so then say educational skills. If you’re the kind of person who lives to accomplish things and get things done, this is a great start. It’s so important you have the drive to achieve the goals you have set out for yourself. Have something to aim for and take pride when you can say ‘I achieved this and was part of something important.’

Being young and having so much you wish to achieve can often have knock on effects regarding self-confidence. This will get easier the more experience you gain. If you have the guts to brave making big decisions that’s enough to give you a chance in the running.

A Motivator

Some would say having the ability to motivate a group of people is a skill you are born with; you either have it or you don’t. I disagree with this statement. The more experience you have within a work and business environment the faster you understand what gets people moving. The most vital step you should take is to invest time into trying to understand other people’s ticks, knowing when there is a lull amongst colleges and using your role of authority to pick up a team’s spirits.

Attention to Detail

For people to take you seriously you must create a professional business persona. Meaning that in every form of communication be it face to face or email you are professional and approachable. Email communication is incredibly important, this requires you to be strict with regards to grammar and tone of voice. Knowing correct business English goes along when running your own business and communicating with clients. Spend some time looking for English courses in London and around the UK to better your communications and grammar.

Human Resources

HR is essential for any business; it is however very common for business owners to feel as if they are heading into unknown territory when considering HR. It certainly is a necessity for any fully functioning business, if your operations aren’t being looked after you’ll soon find yourself swimming in trouble. It’s always worth looking in hr training programs or a CIPD qualification to better your understanding of everything HR including; employment law, training, tax, employment eligibility. No matter how small your business employee well-being depends on HR.

Socialising

You may have heard people say that ‘you are who you hang around with’. Socialising and getting yourself known are both important factors towards your growth as a respected business man or woman. Of course the more people you meet the higher chance you’ll have of growing your client base at greater speed. It’s fundamental that you have people in your life who understandings the ups and downs of starting out as a small business.

4 Reasons Why You Need To Start Getting More Sleep Starting Today

We are all guilty of fighting going to sleep every now and then. You might want to stay up to watch the end of a TV series or want to go out dancing until the early hours. We all know that we should be getting eight hours minimum each night, but many of us still aren’t getting it. We then spend the majority of our days complaining about how tired we are and how we need rest. But even then, the urge to stay awake for longer persists. While there is nothing wrong with little sleep occasionally, not getting enough regularly can be severe. From your health to your looks, not sleeping enough can affect your life in more ways than one. Here are six compelling reasons that will show you just how important getting more sleep each night can be.

It can help you to lose weight

Whether it’s for health reasons or to boost your confidence, losing weight is something many of us strive to achieve. But did you know that getting more sleep each night can actually help you achieve this? Sufficient sleep promotes the development of a hormone called Leptin, which suppresses your appetite. This will stop you from experiencing the urge to gorge and overeat. You can also burn more calories by extending how long you sleep by just one or two hours. Whereas a lack of sleep can have the opposite effect which makes you feel hungry and encourages you to gain weight. So if you’re struggling to stick to your diet and can’t shift the pounds, your limited amount of sleep could be to blame. Sleeping will also give you the strength and energy you need to exercise each day, which will also be beneficial when you’re trying to lose weight. Get yourself to be a little earlier each night to help you create and maintain a fit and healthy body in no time.

It can make you look better

While we all know how good sleep is for our health, it also has some other advantages we should utilize. While you are asleep your body repairs and rejuvenates itself ready for the day ahead. This can give you a fresher appearance and lets you make the most of your looks. As well as getting rid of dark circles, it also reduces puffiness and redness around the eyes. It can also give you a glowing complexion, fewer wrinkles and makes you look happier. On top of that, it’s also been said to improve the effectiveness of your skincare products by increasing blood flow and skin repair. In addition to that, you will also find that you can create flawless finishes with your makeup far easier and with fewer products. It’s always obvious when someone looks well rested, and you’ll begin to notice changes to your appearance instantly. With some of the benefits of a good night’s sleep showing after one night. What more reason do you need to get more sleep than to make you look better. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing.

It can reduce your mood swings

If you often find that your emotions are continually all over the place, not getting enough sleep could be a cause. People who don’t get their right amount of sleep each night increase their chances of developing anxiety and depression. Any of these conditions can have serious effects on your wellbeing, relationships, and career. If they persist, they can also keep you awake at night, which in turn could make your condition worse. So it’s essential that we all develop positive sleeping habits now and reduce the risk of this happening. Mood swings are the most common effect of a lack of sleep with many feeling angry, frustrated and stressed. We have all experienced these emotions at some time or another. We are more susceptible to lash out and start arguments when we are feeling this way which could have detrimental effects on our lives. Making sure you have eight hours every night will boost your mood making you feel happier all round. The best way of doing this is by starting a sleep schedule where you wake up and go to sleep at the same time each day. This will naturally let your body know when you need to wake up and sleep. In little time, your mood and outlook will be more positive and happier as a result.

It can make you pain-free

Recent research has proven that getting sufficient sleep can improve a person’s pain sensitivity. Just two extra hours of sleep per night can ease the pain and discomfort of chronic back and joint issues. As well as other issues such as swollen ankles and severe wounds. This additional sleep helps to decrease inflammation caused by these health concerns. In comparison, a lack of sleep can increase this inflammation and therefore causing further pain. So it’s vital that you get plenty of it. To enhance this effect even further, you need to make sure you are sleeping on the right kind of mattress. Sleeping on a worn or incorrect mattress can exacerbate your back or joint pain. We all have different preferences when it comes to mattresses, so it is essential that you have one that suits. Some styles of mattress are credited with giving extra support to help ease your pain from a health issue or injury more effectively. There are many different styles to choose from, so you need to do your research. You could read a pocket sprung mattress guide online or try some mattresses in store to test the varying firmness levels and styles.

Now you can see how important sleeping is; you can start changing your habits for the better. It’s something we all take for granted, but it needs to be a priority. Nothing will make you look and feel as good as sleep can. So why not go to bed a little earlier tonight and see just how much better you feel come morning.

Wedding Planning: What You Need To Budget For

It’s easy to get very stressed while you’re planning your wedding. Everyone has their perfect idea of the day in their head, but it can sometimes be difficult creating this in reality. Especially at the average cost of weddings these days. But you don’t have to panic that your wedding won’t be up to scratch. Take a deep breath and read through this handy wedding planning guide. It tells you all the important things you need to budget for.

The Venue

Your wedding venue is going to be probably your biggest cost. Especially if you have one venue for the ceremony and another for the reception and evening party. Stately homes such as clevedonhall.co.uk are very popular venues with those wanting a traditional wedding. If you have a church wedding, you will also be expected to pay towards the use of the church. For a fairly cheap day, say your vows in a registry office and put up a marquee in your garden for the reception.

The Dress

Every bride-to-be will have spent so long dreaming about the perfect wedding dress! You’ll probably have spent a long time getting into the shape so you can fit into your ideal design. So it’ll be a shame if you can’t afford the dress you want. Be sure to set some money aside specifically for the wedding dress. Don’t forget; you will also need to buy the groom’s suit and the bridesmaid dresses.

Catering

Depending on the venue you choose for the reception, catering might be included in the price. If not, you will need to include it in your budget. There are loads of different options when it comes to wedding breakfasts and receptions. You can see a lot of ideas on websites like weddingideasmag.com/category/wedding-catering/. A sit-down three-course meal will usually be one of the most expensive options. To keep things on the cheap side, opt for a buffet.

Stag and Hen Dos

Quite a few couples forget to budget for their stag and hen do parties. Even though these aren’t a part of the main day, you should still consider them in your wedding budget. If you don’t save up for them, they may turn out disappointing! So decide early on what you want to do and work out how much it will cost. You can keep cost down by simply going on a night out. If you want to push the boat out, jet off for a relaxing weekend in a European beach resort!

The Rings

They may only be small, but they are a very important item for your big day! And can be very expensive. Simple gold bands can be reasonably priced. However, if you want any inscriptions or other personalised designs, they may push the price up. Take a look at jewellery websites. They sometimes offer a discount if you order online.

If your wedding is just around the corner, it’s time to start saving now. Otherwise your bank balance might say ‘I don’t’!

Strong Body, Strong Bones – Five Steps to Preventing Osteoporosis

No matter what your age is, you need to tackle the matter of preventing any harm to your bones now rather than later! Osteoporosis is a condition you have most surely heard about and you do not even like its name. Wait for it, what it actually is will make you start your fight to keep bones as healthy as possible immediately.

As you grow older the inapt ability your body has to recover your bones gradually becomes weaker and weaker and as the time goes by your bones begin to lose their density. From the age of 35 you are likely to experience the first symptom – a fracture after a relatively mild trauma, like falling from a higher surface to the ground.

So what is it that you can do now rather than wait for the first sign to invest into a painless future?

1. Exercise on a regular basis

As you grow older your body is not as flexible as it used to be and you have to do a bit of work out not only to stay feet but care about your health, and prevent conditions such as osteoporosis too. Everyone aged more than 19 should introduce a work routine into their daily lives. What you need is 150 minutes of aerobics exercises per week, and a lot of workouts related to your posture. The key to successfully fighting against this condition is to go for weight-bearing and resistance workouts. Some of the weight-bearing ones you can opt for are walking, dancing, stair climbing – the ones you can or already do every day. Try to walk at least 5 miles per week. It is easy to do! Get off at an earlier bus stop and enjoy a walk that will help your bones and mind to relax. When it comes to resistance exercises, if you do not like gyms you can do them at your home. You should do this kind of exercise three times a week to successfully prevent the first signs of osteoporosis.

2. Healthy eating

A healthy balanced diet is the pre-requisite for having a healthy lifestyle but it is specifically important for fighting against conditions such as osteoporosis. You need to think in the terms of placing food rich in Vitamin D as your priority on the grocery shopping list. Our skin absorbs Vitamin D from the sun, and those living in areas where there is insufficient sunlight must think ahead of the time and embark on preventing osteoporosis as soon as possible. If you spend a little time outside you are bound to have low levels of Vitamin D and you will need to go for healthy groceries: tuna, salmon, yoghurt and mushrooms.

osteoporosis 2

3. Calcium intake

What your bones lack in order to be strong is calcium so you need to look for means how to take in the sufficient amount of it per day, which is 700 mg for adults. Your body is in dire need of this mineral as it helps it work normally. The density of bones is directly related to the amount of calcium there is. To get the right amount of this mineral in your body, you can buy calcium supplements and/or eat a lot of leafy greens. Whatever you choose, do it as sooner as you can.

4. Give up on alcohol

Having a one too many never seemed like a much of a problem when you were younger but apart from having more severe hangovers, your body is trying to send you an alarm signal that it suffers and your bones will suffer even more if you do not limit alcohol intake. Alcohol has a bad effect on calcium because it interferes with the absorption and heavy drinking affects your liver so it can have issues regarding calcium, too. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink or quit completely in order to grow old with healthy bones.

osteoporosis 3

9 Tips to Save Time in the Morning

Are you always running late for work? Try these simple tips to save time in the morning…

1. Shower (or take a bath) at night, instead of in the morning

This way you’ll sleep like a baby and save precious morning time.
OR, If you must shower in the morning, use a 2in1 cleansing conditioner (Like Loreal EverCreme), also, you can speed dry your hair by wrapping it in a micro-fibre hair towel for 10-15 mins while you do other stuff… this cuts blow drying time in half 🙂

Time saved : 10 mins

2. Shave at night

Apart from the time it takes, shaving also irritates your skin sometimes… If you do it at night, your skin will be normal by the morning, and to save even more time, use an epilator!

Time saved : 10 mins

3. Prepare your work bag at night

You won’t have to pick out 10 different things (and forget some) for your bag in the morning if you already have it packed and ready to go!

Time saved : 5 mins

4. Pick out your clothes at night

Gather all the clothes, shoes and accessories that you’re going to wear and keep them in one place every night. You could also try putting together the whole week’s clothes on a sunday.

Time saved: 5 mins

5. Pre-Make your lunch

Prepare and pack your lunch the night before, then freeze or refrigerate it.

Time saved: 10 mins

6. Have a quick breakfast

Save the time consuming, lavish breakfast recipes for weekends and go for a quick and easy breakfast…or simply eat leftovers…or grab some fruit. You could try pre-making breakfast too! Check out this Freezable Breakfast Burrito Recipe

Time saved: 5 mins

7. Use Cleansing wipes

Instead of washing your face (which you already did at night) use cleansing wipes to freshen up.

Time saved: 5 mins

8. Make smart makeup choices

Cut unnecessary beauty items from your morning routine and use products that multi-task.
Skip the eye cream and toner.
Use a pencil instead of a liquid eyeliner.
Use a 2-4 eyeshadow palette so you don’t have to pick out shades yourself.
Eyeshadow sticks work well too… just swipe and go.
Use an all in one BB cream instead of seperate concealer, foundation and sunscreen.
(Or use a stick foundation)
Use a stain as blush and lipstick (like Benetint)
And use your fingers to blend makeup whenever possible. This is quicker and save you time as you won’t have to wash the makeup brushes afterwards.

Time saved: 10 mins

9. Do a quick workout (instead of a full blown one)

If you like to workout in the morning, pick your favourite 10 minute workout dvd and go with it for a quick workout without leaving your home.
Or try doing 15 repetitions each of crunches, push-ups, tricep dips, squats and lunges. (3 sets)
If you’re not into working out in the morning, at least do some quick stretches… you’ll feel more active and ready for the day!

Time saved: 10 mins

So now you’ve saved total 70 minutes of morning time! Use this time to cuddle with your man, for a morning quickie, for sleeping a little more or anything else you want!
